Connecting the dots in digital transformation

I am currently working for a client, supporting them in a change program to align onboarding new staff better. In the weeks that I am analyzing the company, I see many initiatives to use new technology. Think of AI, Apps, Machine Learning, QR codes, and other technology.

I am looking for ways to connect these technologies and embedding them into the change program that I am designing together with an internal team of specialists.

Main Drivers

The main drivers that I incorporate are:

  1. Context of learning; making sure the specific content is related to the work this organization does and not to something generic. An example is the use of a simulation for this driver).
  2. Performance linking: create a system or process which enables performance enhancements. An example is management participation.
  3. Knowledge management: can learners find the content easy within the several databases within the organization. We can use, e.g. Artificial Intelligence (AI) for this driver.

Finding solutions is not demanding that much, but connecting them to a program makes it interesting and challenging. The methodology from Westermann, Bonnet & McAffee (2014) can be used as a guiding principle for digital transformation. The four steps they researched are listed below.

Four steps for Digital Transformation

  • Vision; aligning the organization around a shared vision is a crucial first step in articulating the digital transformation journey. Every company has a vision, but a shared vision is not in many companies foreseen.
  • Engagement; It does not appear that many organizations are bringing their employees along with them on their digital transformation journeys and thus creating the necessary culture to make that possible. This also includes creating an employee experience.
  • Governance: A robust governance structure will help translate the vision into action; essential elements are the roles and responsibilities for digital initiatives as they are not often clearly defined.
  • IT & Business relationships; the relationships are critical between the CIO and other members of the leadership team.
